About the Aircraft

The MH-53E Sea Dragon is a minesweeping type of the CH-53E Super Stallion, a large helicopter developed by Sikorsky in the US. It was also operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The engine is equipped with three T64-GE-416 turboshaft engines. It is capable of towing larger minesweeping units at large output, demonstrating high minesweeping capability. It was also deployed to the JMSDF from 1990 and retired in 2017. The MH-53E Sea Dragon was active by taking advantage of its large airlift capacity even in the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
